Cheshire Kindergarten Class 1946 - Humiston School

Subject: Photo taken of my kindergarten class in Cheshire, circa 1946.

This picture was an official school shot, taken when I was in kindergarten in Cheshire in 1946. I am the little popinjay in the first row, wearing a tie and a sport coat.

I was born in '41 in Waterbury, and we went West to California in the fall of '47.... the woman on the right is who I remember to be my teacher. I am not 100% sure. I am the little popinjay in the first row, wearing a tie and a sport coat. My folks were not wealthy at all, and they both worked. ... Today, as a retired teacher (all grade levels, including university), all my ties and sport coats are either gone, or hanging far back in one of the closets. I also live in an area where very few people wear ties for any reason. I remember riding the bus, and catching it near where we lived in Cheshire ... I recall my teacher being a kind and understanding lady. When we moved to the San Joaquin Valley in California, I also recall being about two grades ahead in reading and spelling. I took some teasing because I was the only kid that wore shorts - while all the others wore jeans. I was the only six year old in first grade, and the only one that could spell white. I can remember that like it was yesterday. My hope is that some of the youngsters in the picture will recognize themselves. They would all be 68 or 69 years young now.
