HEADSTONE INSCRIPTIONS
TOWN OF CHESHIRE CONNECTICUT

The following are links to bring you to PDF documents of the Headstone Inscriptions, Town of Cheshire of 1934. This list includes all the headstone inscriptions in Cheshire cemeteries. The list was sponsored by the Connecticut State Library and copied under the auspices of FERA (Federal Emergency Relief Administration) and WPA (Works Progress Administration), two Depression-era, federal agencies that provided "work relief." It is reproduced here with the permission of the Connecticut State Library.

If you visit Hillside Cemetery, Wallingford Road, Cheshire, CT 06410 (tel.: 203 271-3603, ask for Phyllis).
You'll need to know the layout. As you enter through the arch:

ARCH - Entry
[as you look down the driveway at the flag pole, Section A-E on the right, Section F-H on the left]

Section A --------driveway-------- Section F
Section B --------driveway-------- Section G
Section C --------driveway-------- Section H
Section D
Section E [flag pole] Section J (Section J is also the area behind the flagpole) Section I (all around the turn circle)

There is no access out other than the gate above. DO NOT try to drive through Section E (to the right) thinking this is going to take you somewhere. It will not. This takes you to a very narrow, scary curve over an embankment and then an abrupt dead end. You will need to carefully back up and out and you will be very stressed. (I am speaking from experience as once upon a time you could drive through to the new section. Now you can't.) Now I park outside the arch (where I took this picture) and very happily walk into the old section of the cemetery. The new section is easier to travel on / through. You can park at the Cheshire Historical Society and walk 3 blocks south to the old section. We have a Heritage Walk for part of this area and there are some nice restaurants and coffee shops all within fair walking range. Regards, Diane Calabro
